Nose Magazine Issue 02 - Primed (March 2026) “Notes on Air: A Perfume Index”
This second edition of Nose Magazine is centred around the proposition that scent, more than other senses, is shaped by suggestion. Exploring this topic, my contribution features a short essay addressing the nature of the practice of reviewing, accompanied by a number of critical fragrance reviews.
Nose Magazine Issue 01 - Top Notes (May 2025) “The Right to Experience: Imagination and the Substance of Sensation”
My article, “The Right to Experience: Imagination and the Substance of Sensation”, features in the inaugural issue of Melbourne-based Nose Magazine. A collection of perspectives and sentiments on the sense of smell, my article investigates the notion of aesthetic experience and the pivotal work of the imagination, blurring our sense modalities together into a single force of sensation - with a knowledge of its own.
“What are we to do? For the sake of the aesthetic the only ethical principle is to let the experience do its work. How hard it might seem to relinquish control and to put aside our resistances-but the aesthetic makes it easy. We do not lose ourselves; rather, we expand into openness. Let all of the experience fill you up with its air, a substance that fills while rendering weightless-until you too begin to float.”

An early radio appearance discussing the connection between philosophy and fragrance, and the ideal way one can travel with fragrance.
“Russ, Jo and Corie talk with 19 year old perfume curator/specialist Liam Sardea. He discussses his early influences and how he got started in the business, his blog and public speaking. Liam gives advice, tips and relates scent to philosophy. A teenaged prodigy!”
